South Tyneside Film Makers 2018

Our Club had film shot over forty years ago and when Tomorrow’s History run by the North East Museums, Libraries and Council gave us a small grant we made the documentary film ‘The Bygone Years’.    This featured South Shields Ferry, the Market Place and Hodge Removals.

With the help of Janice Blower of the Cookson Column in the South Shields Gazette local people came forward and we recorded their memories on film.

We had the 'premiere' at the Customs House, South Shields.

Through Tomorrow’s History we found that Brandling Primary School were keen to have their musical of the Felling Pit Disaster recorded on film so we spent two interesting days at the school.

Later we recorded Trafalgar Day Commemoration organised by Sunderland Old Township Society. This was a three camera shoot in Sunderland Old Parish Church where there was a re-enactment in full period dress of the death of Lord Nelson.

Hebburn Sports Club had been given a grant to refurbish their sports facilities and again our movie maker members recorded each step of the way.

In 2003 we agreed to film the Beamish Rally of vintage vehicles

travelling a 150 mile route in Durham and North Yorkshire. There

were ten checkpoints along the way where the drivers were examined

by the marshals on the Highway Code of today and yesteryear.

We had five members with their cameras at various stages of the

course and in addition we had a roving camera team to cover other parts and interview the drivers. With 150 cars, motor cycles and small buses it was an exhausting day but well worth while.

Our chairman, Eric Parr, has always been fascinated by the skills that people have and when he met a retired engineer called Malcolm Young, he found out he made old bicycles from scrap materials he knew he had the makings of an interesting video. Malcolm specialises in the ‘penny farthing’ cycle and has made a lot of different types reflecting the era.

Thus the film - VELOCIPEDES ………..the early bicycles"    was made.
